A portrait of Marshall McLuhan

The pandemic has increased the power and presence of media and technology in all our lives. At the same time, it has revealed the wound of our loneliness and separation. Change has overtaken us. Technology has overrun us. And we have been apart too long. We need time to reflect and process. In too many ways, these communication tools have cluttered us with noise, getting in the way from hearing God's voice in our lives.

Marshall McLuhan was an internationally famous Canadian professor, regarded as the "prophet of the Information Age" and credited for predicting the Internet 35 years before its time. Professor McLuhan was also a devout Catholic who spent his career teaching in Catholic universities. He deeply understood how media and technology were shaping our modern lives and asked us "to open our eyes and pay attention" to the changes happening to us. As a Catholic, speaking of the spiritual dangers of our information age, he announced, "At such times, it becomes crucial to hear properly and to tune yourself into the right frequency."

Deiren Masterson is a fellow St. Theresa's parishioner and a professional filmmaker who produced the award-winning film, "McLuhan Way: In Search of Truth" on the life and Catholic faith of Marshall McLuhan.

In this special online Lenten Retreat, we will be gathering for a time of prayerful reflection, to watch this deeply thoughtful 42-minute film to reflect on the promises and pitfalls of our communication tools, and to reflect on the true Communion we all seek - the Communion with our Lord and God.
